Being located in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with a rich marine biodiversity, Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu was one of the first resorts in the Maldives to have a full-time, resident Marine Biologist on the island.
Our Marine Biologists at the resorts are responsible for developing our marine conservation and protection programmes. They monitor the coral reefs and conduct coral replanting schemes to strengthen these important ecosystems.
They collect data and conduct important research for our marine conservation partners such as the Olive Ridley Project, Manta Trust, Shark Watch, as well as for our in-house Turtle ID Programme.
Sharing Knowledge
The Marine Biologists also host unique guided snorkelling tours, where guests can go on an in-depth exploration of the underwater world with an expert to guide and educate them.
Our Maldives Marine Biologists are a great source of information about marine life and are always more than happy to talk to our guests about the wonders of the ocean. They conduct weekly presentations for guests and host regular awareness sessions for our associates as well.
Turtle Nesting
Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu is a nesting site for Green Sea turtle, which are an endangered species. On the IUCN Red list of threatened species, these beautiful, peaceful creatures need all the help they can get to protect their nests from predators.
Our Marine Biologist is on hand to protect the eggs, monitor the nests for hatchlings, and relocate the nests to safer ground if required. We inform our guests whenever one of these nests start to hatch, and many of our guests have been lucky enough to witness these wonders of nature.
