Full Moon Fishing in the Maldives

Jul, 30 2018

Any Maldivian worth their salt will tell you that the full moon is the best time for handline fishing in this country.

The glow of the moon shimmering across the water as you drop your fishing line surrounded by the peace and quiet of the Maldivian sea is not the only reason to hop on a boat this full moon.

A full moon casts more light on the water at night, affecting feeding patterns of fish as they can see better, so they seek food in greater ranges during this time. This increases the likelihood of hooking larger fish around a full moon.

Additionally, the ocean tides rise along with the full moon, which leads to stronger currents. The theory is that these stronger currents lead to more active baitfish, and their predators, giving fishermen a greater opportunity to make a catch.

Even if you’re not able to go fishing on the same night as the full moon, fear not! The effects of the full moon on fish activity can be witnessed even a few days before and after the full moon.

At Coco Bodu Hithi and Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu, we offer Night Fishing experiences during the full moon. To experience full moon fishing, please talk to our friendly team at the Reception and they will be happy to help.
